The 12-term congressman from Pennsylvania was a lifelong conservationist who understood that the tie between the words "conservative" and "conservationist" wasn’t just semantic. He was tireless in fighting to preserve wilderness before wilderness preservation was cool. Finally, late in his career, his efforts bore fruit in the form of the Wilderness Act of 1964 and the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act of 1968.
