The former Union general may have run the most corrupt administration in history, but he got one thing right. On March 1, 1872, Grant signed legislation that create Yellowstone National Park — the first national park in the world. As unique as Yellowstone is, the legislation created more than just one park; it enshrined the idea that Conness had pushed for earlier — that protecting nature could be a form of enlightened public policy.
