At the crossroads of Europe and the Middle East
In this stunning photo captured by European Space Agency astronaut André Kuipers, the International Space Station (ISS) orbits several hundred miles above the glowing city of Istanbul, an ancient city in Turkey that is home to more than 13 million people and is situated at the crossroads of Europe and Asia.
Kuipers, a 53-year-old Dutch flight engineer, is one of six crew members living and working on the ISS as part of Expedition 30.
