After successfully landing its reusable Falcon 9 rocket on a ground-based platform on Dec. 21, 2015, the Elon Musk-led company attempted to land the rocket on an ocean platform on Jan. 18. The fiery results appear in the Instagram video above posted by Musk. According to Musk, a latch failed to clamp over one of the rocket's legs and led to it "tipping over."

This isn't the first time that SpaceX has tried to land a rocket on a barge. It first tried the maneuver on Jan. 10, 2015, but the rocket landed with a similarly explosive touchdown.
