June 8 is World Oceans Day, a global tribute to the seven seas that marks its 20th anniversary this year. Founded in 1992 at the Rio Earth Summit — and later officially recognized by the U.N. in 2008 — it aims to raise awareness about a variety of ocean issues, from overfishing and plastic pollution to acidification and coral bleaching.
