I brake for falling leaves

November 23, 2015, 8 a.m.

Autumn (or a wily leaf raker) has a message for travelers: Slow it down! Photographer Ian Sane gave this photo the fitting title of "Speed Bumps." Little lines of beautiful fall color are draped across the road, putting a little something pretty in front of those passing by so they can quietly contemplate the season, or nature, or color, or anything at all that comes to mind.

While we can often feel frazzled at this time of year when the holiday season is getting rolling, remember this quote from Rachel Carson:

"Those who contemplate the beauty of the earth find reserves of strength that will endure as long as life lasts. There is something infinitely healing in the repeated refrains of nature -- the assurance that dawn comes after night, and spring after winter."
