Poverty's burden

According to the UNFPA, "The total estimated number of slum dwellers is rising — from over 650 million in 1990 to about 863 million in 2012. Almost 62 percent of the urban population in sub-Saharan Africa lived slums in 2010, the highest proportion of any region." That's why poverty eradication is a big focus at the U.N. It's known as the road to dignity, and it’s carved out in many a U.N. resolution ranging from the Millennium Development Goals, which expire this year, and the new Sustainable Development Goals, an overarching roadmap for achieving a workable future economically, socially and environmentally speaking.
