Cape Fear Basin

The Cape Fear Basin in North Carolina is a rich coastal ecosystem that provides habitat for wildlife and is a recreation destination for birders, fishermen and paddlers.

Under consideration is a massive cement plant that could severely compromise the integrity of this ecosystem by destroying 1,000 acres of ecologically rich wetlands.

According to the SELC, the plant would also pose a serious human health risk by emitting pollutants such as benzene, lead and hydrochloric acid, and further elevate toxic mercury levels in the Northeast Cape Fear River.
