Snowbird Mountains

Known for its stunning views and clear-running streams, the Snowbird Mountains section of the Nantahala Forest in North Carolina is a magnet for hikers, anglers and others who love the outdoors.

An outdated highway expansion plan from the 1960s called Corridor K would cut four lanes of asphalt through stunning mountain terrain and would expose trout streams to acid-laden pollution.

When first proposed 45 years ago, Corridor K was seen as a way to lift Appalachian communities out of poverty. Today these unnecessary road plans threaten the mountain vistas, the streams and the majestic forests that drive a thriving local economy based on outdoor tourism.
