Plumes of smoke from Texas

The recent wildfires in Texas have produced mind-boggling statistics. Since Nov. 15, 2010, as many as 27,976 fires have burned in the Lone Star state and about 3,959,040 acres have been destroyed. NASA captured much of that drama from space. Here we see the Bear Creek fire on Sept. 6, 2011. Plumes of smoke are visible in the lower left corner of the image. Remnants of Tropical Storm Lee are in the right part of the image, providing relief just out of the range of the fires.
