Reclaiming the land

Carrizo Plain was once home to farmers who put up vast stretches of barbed wire fencing to mark property and contain livestock. Many fences on abandoned properties within the monument still exist. While pronghorn are incredibly fast runners, they cannot jump fences. Efforts by volunteers to remove or modify fencing has helped to return the plain to a more wild state, and hopefully their efforts will help improve the mobility of the reintroduced herd.
