Spewing volcanic smoke
Geologists predicted that Mount Merapi — loosely translated as the Mountain of Fire — might erupt in early September. On Oct. 25, the volcano erupted three times.
As of Nov. 3, the Mount Merapi eruptions have killed at least 44 people, including Mbah Maridjan, the volcano's spiritual guardian, and left many more injured and displaced from their homes.
A number of countries have offered aid, but Indonesia is not currently accepting foreign aid to assist with the disaster recovery.
