The sun goes down over the Cranberry Pool wetland on Sept. 25 at the Missisquoi National Wildlife Refuge, located on the northeast side of Vermont's Lake Champlain in Franklin County.

Established in 1943, the 6,729-acre refuge serves as an important stop for migratory songbirds and waterfowl looking to feed, rest and breed along its stretch of quiet waters and wetlands. The protected area also features Shad Island, the site of the largest rookery of great blue herons in Vermont.
