Once used primarily to describe sustainable practices in building or 'green building', sustainable design also known as 'green design' refers to the concept and practice of designing products with the environment and social responsibility at the forefront.  Principles of sustainable design include waste prevention, carbon emissions reduction, ergonomics, economic sustainability and efficiency.

According to Jason McLennan, author of The Philosophy of Sustainable Design, the intention of sustainable design is to "eliminate negative environmental impact completely through skillful, sensitive design".

From the private to the public sector -- agriculture to fashion -- sustainable design practices are becoming increasingly mainstream in response to demand for products that are more environmentally and socially conscious. (Photo: Shutterstock)
