The word yoga is derived from the Sanskrit word "yuj," which means "to unify" or "to yoke." Originated in ancient India, yoga consists of a physical, mental and spiritual practice that aims to unify the body, mind and spirit. Yoga has only become popular in the West within the past few decades, with most attention focused on the physical practice of yoga poses.
Meditation is often part of a yoga practice, but not exclusive to yoga. With a broad range of techniques, meditation is practiced by spiritualists, mental health practitioners and individuals. Meditation involves breathing techniques and internal focus designed to bring about a calm, relaxed state of mind. In Western medicine, it's used as a way to help patients manage a wide range of health conditions including anxiety, pain management, hypertension, stress management and depression.
