World Breastfeeding Week kicks off today and runs from Aug 1- Aug 7.  This is a great time to show a little extra love to new moms in your community.

The theme of this year's event --Breastfeeding Support: Close to Mothers-- highlights the need for a support system when it comes to breast-feeding.

It goes without saying that raising a baby is hard work.  It's wonderful work.  But it's hard work indeed.  It involves sleepless nights, endless hours of rocking, soothing, cleaning, and changing, and countless questions about whether or not the baby is eating enough, sleeping enough, and pooping enough.  Add breast-feeding into this mix, and the whole cocktail is multiplied, but with the majority of the work and worry centered squarely on a new mom's shoulders.

Every new mom can use help from her village.  Whether it's a dropped off meal or an offer to rock the baby for 30 minutes while she showers, any help is sure to be appreciated.  So why not celebrate World Breastfeeding Week by helping out a new mom in your community?  Here's a list of ways to help:

  • Change a diaper
  • Give the baby a bath
  • Rock or play with the baby
  • Pick up items from the grocery store
  • Prepare a meal
  • Do the dishes
  • Do the laundry
  • Clean a room
  • Offer to babysit siblings
  • Care for the pets
  • Run errands
  • Encourage mom to rest and care for herself
