Dog shakes off paint

From mutt to maestro

Shelter dogs just can't catch a break — but one project is giving them the opportunity to shine through a blank canvas and a whole lot of edible ink.

"People still prefer to buy a dog just because of its breed instead of adopting a shelter dog," the creative mind behind the Canismo, Gabriel Morais told MNN. "What inspired me the most was the fact that all dogs — regardless of the breed — have talents, we just need to give them a chance for them to show it."

Rather than tracing a dog's breed, São Paulo-based Canismo celebrates the diversity of each mutt. "The combination of different colours in the painting shows the mixture of breeds, as random and as beautiful as each mongrel dog," the project's website reads.

So far, Canismo dogs have created 18 action paintings, which can be purchased to help keep the project going. The artists behind these paintings have already found homes, but Morais is far from finished. Now, he setting his sights on galleries in the U.S. and Europe. "Since it's a worldwide issue, I really want to take this issue abroad," he said.
