A tabby cat name Smudge has become a national celebrity in the United Kingdom after the news hit that he saved his 5-year-old "human" from a gang of bullies. Smudge has been nominated for Hero Cat of the Year in the U.K.'s National Cat Competition, coming up next month.
According to Sharon Fenton of Doncaster, England, her son Ethan was playing in their yard when a group of older boys approached him. The boys call her son's name but Ethan tried to ignore them. That's when one of the older boys shoved him to the ground.
Fenton recalls that she immediately rushed outside — and what she saw amazed her. Before Fenton could get to her son and confront the bullies, the family cat Smudge flew out from under the car and pounced on the boy who had pushed her son down. That boy ran off in tears.
Fenton told the Daily Mail, “He has slept outside his bedroom keeping guard ever since it happened. I actually feel so much safer knowing Smudge is around after seeing him defend him like that. He is a big part of the family, and he is more of a brother to the boys than a cat."
Smudge will find out in a few weeks if he has won the Hero Cat of the Year competition, but I'm pretty sure there is at least one family that has already given him the title.
