Original Dog Beach at Ocean Beach, San Diego

Unleash the beast! As its name relays, this sand-strewn pooch paradise in the super laid-back San Diego surf community of Ocean Beach is the Original Dog Beach. Founded in 1972 as one of the first official dog beaches in the U.S., Dog Beach is described as “a melting pot for people and dogs, all sizes, shapes, colors, creeds, and breeds” and a place where “on any given day, dogs run freely in the ocean, surfers surf the Dog Beach Break, and people and dogs co-exist peacefully.” We’re sold.

Open 24/7, the 38-acre OBDB is also popular among non-dog-owning visitors who show up just to watch some of the happiest pooches on Earth run amok. It’s that magical — just mind where you step. And don’t forget to hit up the Dog Beach Dog Wash, also in Ocean Beach. You don’t want Bernice the Bernese bringing the beach back home with her, now do you?
