This year, skip the shopping mall and head somewhere where your efforts will help thin out the crowd: your local animal shelter.

From Black Friday through Cyber Monday, you can adopt a furry friend at no cost at participating no-kill shelters through’s “Home for the Pawlidayz” promotion. The online retailer is sponsoring the cost of adoption fees for cats and dogs through Best Friends Animal Society, along with more than 100 of its partners.

Adoption fees typically cover the cost of initial veterinary exams, as well as heartworm tests, vaccinations, microchips and spaying and neutering.

For every adoption from Nov. 27 through Nov. 30, Zappos will also donate an additional $150 to Best Friends — a nonprofit that runs the nation’s largest no-kill animal sanctuary — to help cover the cost of food, medical care, immunizations and training for animals waiting for their forever homes. Zappos’ total donation amount, including adoption fees, is a maximum of $1.1 million.

“Thousands of dogs and cats are in need of a loving home, and we’re excited to give customers the ability to make a difference,” Steven Bautista, Head of Karma at Zappos, said in a news release.
