When Jessica Shyba’s puppy began joining her son for afternoon naps, she snapped photos of the precious pair, and the pictures soon went viral.
The Shyba family adopted Theo, a 7-week-old boxer-Labrador-shepherd mix, from the Santa Cruz SPCA & Humane Society on Nov. 4.
Theo and his 10 siblings had been abandoned and were shy puppies, but Jessica says Theo bounded into her son Beau’s lap as soon as he entered their pen.
“The look on his little furry face was enough to seal the deal for me,” she wrote on her blog. “We had met our newest family member.”
The Shyba family planned to crate train their new addition, but on the first night Theo’s cries woke Jessica’s husband who ended up sleeping on the couch with the puppy. Jessica vowed that Theo would sleep in his crate the next night, but she couldn’t bear his cries. On that night, the puppy slept with her.
During his third day at his forever home, Theo fell asleep on Beau as Jessica rocked him to sleep for his nap, and Jessica nearly woke them up because she was “practically howling at the cuteness.”
“The following day, Theo met us up in my room for the nap time ritual, and so began what I can only describe as the most organic and beautiful friendship I have ever witnessed,” she wrote.
“Each day, Theo meets us at naptime and waits patiently for Beau to fall asleep. By that time, he’s also sleepy, so when I hoist him onto our bed, he stumbles over to Beau and plops right down on top of him. And there they sleep, entwined, for at least two hours.”
Jessica couldn’t resist documenting the adorable daily naps, and she began sharing her photos on Instagram with the hashtag #TheoandBeau.
Since then, the naptime photos have amassed a huge fan base, and many people have asked about the shelter where Theo was adopted.
Jessica took to her blog to explain that the Santa Cruz SPCA & Humane Society is in desperate need of funding for a new building and has asked that Theo and Beau’s admirers make a donation to the nonprofit.
