One of my goals this spring was to come up with a cocktail using my homemade limoncello. After trying many unusual combinations, I decided to try something not so unusual – a lemon, strawberry type combination.

After playing with measurements and ingredients (Should I add simple syrup? Fresh lemon on top of the limoncello? Sparkling wine or club soda?), I finally came up with a recipe I really like. Now, I just need to come up with name. Strawberry Lemonade cocktail tells it like it is, but it’s not very exciting and probably already exists. So I went to the crowd, and asked my friends of Facebook. Now, I’m asking all of you, too.

Here is the recipe I created. In a tall glass filled with ice add:

  • 1 oz vodka
  • 1 oz limoncello
  • 1 oz strawberry shrub
  • juice of half a lemon
  • top with club soda
Here are some of the names that have been suggested so far the cocktail pictured at right.
  • Summer Blush
  • Pink Sprinkler
  • Citrus Sprinkler
  • Berry Bomb
  • Pink Hammock
  • Sweet Pucker
  • Pink Pucker
  • Strawberry Sass
  • Strawberry Spritzer
None of those names are saying, “Yes, I’m it!” to me, although I’ve been playing with combinations of all the suggestions.

So, now I’m asking all of you. How would you go about naming an original cocktail? Would you make it obvious what the ingredients are? Would you make sure it was named seasonally? What would you name this voda, limoncello, strawberry shrub concoction?

How do you name a cocktail?
I’ve measured and poured and tasted and played and finally created a cocktail I’d be proud to serve to friends. Now, what do I call it?
