Last year, on the 100th anniversary of Julia Child’s birth, there was a lot of celebration and remembrances of many people’s favorite home cook. Today would have been her 101st birthday, and while there isn’t as much fanfare, Amazon is offering “As Always, Julia: The Letters of Julia Child and Avis DeVoto” as one of its Kindle Daily Deals. Today only it’s $1.99.
The book contains the personal letters that were exchanged between Julia Child and her friend, Avis DeVoto, and chronicles the frustrations Julia had while writing “Mastering the Art of French Cooking.” It also has details of the personal, public and political lives of both women and their husbands.
As I wrote when I reviewed “As Always, Julia,” I fell in love with these letters and the two women who wrote them. I learned some political history and culinary history.
I think $1.99 for this book is a bargain, and if you enjoy reading memoirs and autobiographies centered around the world of food, this is book is a must-read. You don’t need to have a Kindle to purchase the book. You can use the Kindle app for other tablets or even download it to your computer.
