One of the resources I use frequently to get news and information about what’s going on in our food system is the blog Civil Eats. The blog provides posts that promote “critical thought about sustainable agriculture and food systems.” It’s well-written and well-researched, and I’ve linked to them on several occasions from this blog.

Something I didn’t realize about Civil Eats is that it has been a completely voluntary effort. Co-founders Paula Crossfield and Naomi Starkman have never paid themselves for their work on the site nor have they paid any of their writers. They call it a labor of love.

They’d like to change that. Paula and Naomi would like to be able to pay their writers and themselves. I saw this tweet today from Naomi and it led me to discover they have a Kick Starter campaign to raise funds for their 2014 publishing year.

They’re looking to raise $100,000 by October 18, and they have about $55,000 more to raise. Like all Kick Starter projects it’s an all or nothing proposition. If they don’t raise the entire amount, they don’t get any of the money that’s been pledged in their support.

With the money, they hope to hire a managing editor, bring on a correspondent from Washington, D.C., and start to pay their writers for original reporting. Those are all things that will only improve the already excellent quality of the reporting on Civil Eats.

I get requests to promote Kick Starter projects frequently. Some I choose to promote; some I don’t. Civil Eats didn’t contact me to ask to be promoted. I’m writing about it because it would be a great loss if the website disappeared. I would hate to see this site disappear that I rely on and that people like Michael Pollan, Mark Bittman and Laurie David rely on, too.
