Earlier this week I cited a piece from The Washington Post that said the Food and Drug Administration was beginning the process of creating limits for sodium in processed foods. In fact, the piece said the “FDA is planning an unprecedented effort to gradually reduce the salt consumed each day by Americans.” The information came from an anonymous source within the FDA.

It turns out The Washington Post may have jumped the gun. The FDA has issued the following in a statement.

A story in today’s Washington Post leaves a mistaken impression that the FDA has begun the process of regulating the amount of sodium in foods. The FDA is not currently working on regulations nor has it made a decision to regulate sodium content in foods at this time.

Over the coming weeks, the FDA will more thoroughly review the recommendations of the IOM report and build plans for how the FDA can continue to work with other federal agencies, public health and consumer groups, and the food industry to support the reduction of sodium levels in the food supply. The Department of Health and Human Services will be establishing an interagency working group on sodium at the Department that will review options and next steps.

The statement is worded carefully enough to allow for an announcement somewhere down the road from the FDA that may say they are going to limit sodium, but they aren’t saying it just yet.

The IOM report mentioned in the statement refers to Strategies to Reduce Sodium Intake in the United States, a consensus report released on April 20, 2010 from the Food and Nutrition Board.
