There are still five days left until Christmas, so I wouldn’t say it’s the last minute to buy gifts just yet, but it's going to be here soon. Whenever you decide your last minute is, my suggestion for a gift that any food lover would enjoy is a subscription to one of Edible Communities’ award-winning regional food magazines.

There are more than 75 regional publications throughout the United States and Canada in the community of magazines that focus on family farmers, growers, chefs, recipes and food artisans of all kinds in specific regions. Subscription rates vary based on region and frequency of publication.

Edible Communities won the prestigious James Beard Award for Journalism in 2011, and various regional publications have won individual awards and honors, too.

Most of the magazines are published quarterly, and in my opinion, that makes them more likely to get read. Life moves by at such a quick pace that it seems like any magazine that publishes monthly is unlikely to get read before the next issue arrives. When my Edible Jersey magazine arrives, however, I always make the time to read it because it doesn't come so often and the quality of the content and writing is excellent.

There you have it. My last-minute gift idea for the food lover in your life. Order a subscription online and present your foodie with a card letting him know you've bought him a year's worth of award-winning, regional food journalism.

Disclosure: I write frequently for Edible Jersey magazine, but this gift suggestion is my own and not prompted by any Edible Communities or any of its publications.
