For Aflac, it all starts with giving. In 2011, the company surpassed the $70 million mark in total contributions aimed at treating and curing childhood cancer. A large portion of these donations went to the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center in Atlanta, giving hope to the families facing this terrible disease, and providing financial assistance to scientists searching for a cure. Aflac and its employees also contributed more than $1.25 million to aid tsunami recovery in Japan, where the company conducts over two-thirds of its business.

Aflac is also committed to looking after its own flock. The well-being of its diverse workforce is a top priority, and Aflac's dedication to promoting a balance between work and family helped land it on Fortune's Best Companies to Work For — for 14 years in a row. Aflac's workforce includes 39 percent minorities, 67 percent women, not to mention that 49 percent of women serve at supervisor level or above.

In 2011, Aflac was also named to the Dow Jones Sustainability Index (DJSI) North America list for the first time. Aflac reduced electricity usage in its major buildings by more than 20 percent over the last four years, despite a 24 percent increase in its square footage. Working with its Green Committee, Aflac has bolstered its recycling program to include aluminum, plastic, office paper, cardboard, batteries and more.
