French Swiss Melt

Double down on two kitchen classics bound to please hungry mouths.

Total time: 10 minutes

Yield: Serves 2

French Swiss Melt


  • 1 egg
  • 1 ounce milk
  • Pinch pepper
  • Pinch salt
  • 2 slices Swiss cheese
  • 4 slices sourdough bread
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon butter
  • 1 tablespoon fresh herbs chopped fine: rosemary, thyme, oregano or sage
Cooking directions
  1. Combine egg and milk in shallow mixing bowl. Beat lightly and season with salt and pepper.
  2. Place cheese between sliced bread. Press firmly. Dip into egg batter, soaking each side.
  3. Combine oil and butter in heavy-bottomed skillet over medium heat. Heat until butter begins to froth and bubble, about 2 minutes. Add herbs and saute for 1 minute or until fragrant. Cook sandwich 2 to 3 minutes on each side, until golden brown. Serve hot.
