Caramelized Onions and Apple Puff Pastry

Baking isn't just about dessert. When your sweet tooth is sated, move onto savory appetizers.

Prep time: 10 minutes

Total time: 30 minutes

Yield: Makes 12 appetizers

Caramelized Onions and Apple Puff Pastry

  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 pound yellow onion, sliced thin
  • 1 pound apples, Gala or Fuji, sliced thin
  • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
  • Pinch pepper
  • 6 pastry puff shells, preferably Pepperidge Farm
  • 1 tablespoon fresh thyme, minced
  • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
Cooking directions
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Thaw pastry shells according to package directions.
  2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium heat, about 1 minute. Add onions. Stir occasionally until soft and light brown, about 12 to 15 minutes. Add apples, salt and pepper. Cook combo for about two minutes, or until apples become tender. Reduce heat and cover.
  3. While onions and apples cook, place pasty puff shells on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cook for 10 to 12 minutes, or until golden brown. Remove from oven.
  4. Allow pastry puffs to cool slightly. Gently remove tops and spoon a generous tablespoon of onion-apple mix into each shell. Add any remaining mix to upturned tops. Heat pastry 3 to 4 more minutes.
  5. Sprinkle with thyme and drizzle with balsamic vinegar. Plate and serve warm.
