Caramel in the Can (Dulce de Leche)

More a process than a recipe, dulce de leche is the taste of home in Latino households. Caramel can be eaten straight out of the can, but do yourself a favor and eat it with sliced apples or add to coffee and sip.

Prep time: 1 minute

Total time: 5 hours

Yield: 14 1/2 ounces

Caramel in the Can

  • 1 14.5-ounce can sweetened condensed milk
  • 3 quarts water

  1. Place can in slow cooker, add warm water until can is submerged plus 2 more inches of water.
  2. Set slow cooker to high and cook for 4 hours, making sure can remains covered with water.
  3. Turn off cooker and allow water to cool, about 1 hour. Caramel is ready to serve when can is cool enough to touch. Store in airtight container.
