5 ways to reimagine the burger, minus the meat

Garbanzo Burger

Tired of hummus and need a main course? This kitchen staple is a good alternative.

Prep time: 20 minutes

Total time: 40 minutes

Yield: Feeds 4


  • 1 15.5-oz. can garbanzo beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 red bell pepper, stemmed, seeded and chopped
  • 1 organic carrot, diced
  • 3 garlic cloves, crushed
  • 2 tbs. cilantro, chopped
  • 1 teaspoon chili pepper powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tbs. tahini paste
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/3 cup breadcrumbs
  • Hamburger buns
  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.
  2. Mash garbanzo beans in large mixing bowl into a thick chunky paste, about 3 minutes.
  3. Combine pepper, carrot, garlic and cilantro in a food processor. Whiz until finely chopped, about 30 seconds. Add ingredients to mixing bowl.
  4. Season with salt and pepper. Add chili, salt, black pepper, tahini paste and sesame oil. Then add breadcrumbs. Fold until ingredients are evenly distributed in the mix. Mold even sized patties about 3/4 inch thick.
  5. Place patties on baking sheet and place sheet on lower rack of oven. Cook for 10 minutes and then flip once. Cook 10 to 15 minutes more. Plate and serve with condiments of your choice, any combination of greens, mayo, pepper, tomato and salt.
