The all-new MacBook Pro with Retina display was unveiled at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on Monday. Like other popular Apple products, the new MacBook Pro is arsenic-free, BFR-free, PVC-free and includes mercury-free glass. The laptop is also highly recyclable and meets Energy Star 5.2 regulations.


Although the new laptop was just revealed to the public on Monday, Apple already has an environmental FAQ (PDF) for the MacBook Pro with Retina display available on its website. The laptop is expected to produce a total of 710 kg of carbon dioxide emissions over its lifetime.


The vast majority of the emissions, about 73 percent, comes from the production process. Customer use is responsible for 21 percent of the 710 kg of CO2 emissions while transportation accounts for 5 percent of CO2 emissions and recycling the final one percent.


Since the new MacBook Pro with Retina display is lighter, only 4.46 pounds, Apple is able to use less packaging to ship the product. In addition to using less packaging due to the smaller size, Apple has also made the packaging more efficient than previous 15-inch MacBook Pro models. These changes will allow up to 84 percent more MacBook Pros to be packed into each shipping container. This reduces the individual environmental footprint of each MacBook Pro produced.


If all this has you excited about the new MacBook Pro with Retina display, now is the time that I need to deliver some bad news. The base model begins at $2,199. This is $400 higher than the entry level 15-inch MacBook Pro without the fancy new display. If you’d like to upgrade to the better-equipped model, be prepared to spend at least $2,799.
