Deadly impact

A young heron dies while crouching amidst the oil-contaminated mangroves on May 23 in an island off the coast of Louisiana impacted by oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill. The island is home to hundreds of herons, brown pelicans, terns, gulls and roseate spoonbills, all of which are expected to be adversely affected by the pollution.
