Australian teen Cynthia Lam wants to change the world, and she has come up with an invention that might help her do just that.
Lam, a 17-year-old from Melbourne, always thought she was too young to make a difference. But in 2013, inspired by her love of chemistry and her fascination with female scientists such as Rita Levi-Montalcini, the Nobel laureate honored for her work in neurobiology, Lam decided to take a closer look at the issues facing the millions of people on the planet who do not have ready access to clean water.
To address this issue, Lam invented an ingenious mobile device that can purify water and generate electricity using solar power. She calls it H2Pro, and it may change the way people around the world get a drink of water.
The H2Pro device is made up of two parts: the upper unit purifies the water and generates hydrogen while the lower unit allows additional filtration to take place. Dirty, unfiltered water can be poured into the top where it will pass through a titanium mesh unit. When activated by the sun, the unit sterilizes the water.
In her testing, Lam found that the H2Pro could clean 90 percent of the organic pollutants in the water in the space of two hours. She is still tweaking the electrical generation aspect of the design, but it has already earned her some significant recognition. Last year, Lam was one of 15 global finalists at the 2014 Google Science Fair.
