Award-winning actors Jared Leto and Ellen Page have been honored as this year's recipient of PETA's "Sexiest Vegetarian Celebrities". The pair, both vegans, beat out a number of other well-known animal-free foodies, including Maggie Q, Carrie Underwood, director Darren Aronofsky, and newly-minted vegan Samuel L. Jackson.
In praising Leto, who earlier this year won an Academy Award for his incredible role in "The Dallas Buyer's Club," PETA gushed about his decades-long commitment to veganism and youthful looks. "The benefits of his vegan eating sure do show! Jared is 42 years old and arguably hasn’t aged in 20 years!," the org said in a statement.
In an interview with British GQ last year, Leto agreed that his diet (and lots of sleep) was likely responsible for helping him age gracefully.
"I still have plenty of vices, but alcohol isn't one of them," he said. "It's probably just down to sleep and diet. If you travel long haul a lot or don't sleep much, it's not going to last very long, that's for sure. I'm pretty healthy so I think that helps a lot. I've been that way for a long time — 20 solid years of eating vegetarian/vegan and taking care of myself. That probably helps the preservation process."
As for Page, PETA describes the 27-year-old as a "feminist, an environmentalist, an activist, a pioneer, and a compassionate vegan. It doesn’t get sexier than that!"
The long-time environmentalist decided to eschew meat and dairy not only for better health, but also for the animals. After her turn in the eco-thriller "The East", she told Conan O'Brien that she was increasingly interested in the freegan lifestyle.
"It's essentially people who want to live on the outskirts of capitalism and don't want to take accountability for their own footprint on the world," she explained. "So it's essentially about seeing the value in waste and using that. So, for example dumpster diving and getting food that otherwise would go to a dump - good food - and taking it, cooking it, and eating it."
