Synchronized sinking

At the 32nd annual Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN) European swimming championships in Berlin, Spain's synchronized swimmers sink below the surface of the water in unison. The resulting photograph, taken with an underwater camera, immortalizes this moment of anti-gravity grace and gives it a surreal quality. With golden light setting the pool aglow, the swimmers seem to dance between two separate worlds.

The European Aquatics Championships holds competitions in swimming, diving, and open water swimming as well. LEN, which governs aquatic sports throughout Europe, also holds water polo competitions every other year. This year's competition runs through Aug. 24. Fortunately for aquatic sport lovers around the world, the organization offers live webcasting on its website.
