Feb. 7, 2006: In an unusual accord between the timber industry, native groups, government and environmentalists, 5 million acres of the Great Bear Forest in British Columbia are made off limits to logging.

Feb. 7, 2008: A paper in the journal Science asserts that biofuels will worsen greenhouse gas emissions, as forests are cleared for farmland to grow corn and other biofuels crops (biofuel company logo at right).

Feb. 7, 2012:  Mohamed Nasheed, President of the Maldives, is ousted in a peaceful coup.  Nasheed had been an outspoken advocate of action on climate change.  In 2009, Nasheed convened an underwater meeting of the nation’s cabinet to dramatize the islands’ peril from sea level rise.
