June 12, 1996: Pacific Gas & Electric agrees to pay a $333 million settlement for contamination in the small town of Hinkley, Calif. The case is the result of an investigation by law clerk Erin Brockovich, whose life was made into a feature film starring Julia Roberts in 2000.
