Cosco Busan Nov. 7, 1957:  A Presidential Commission chaired by the Ford Foundation's H. Rowen Gaither says that the U.S. is falling far behind the Soviet Union in its nuclear weapons capabilities. The Gaither Report calls for a dramatic U.S. expansion in building both missiles and fallout shelters.

Nov. 7, 2007:  The South Korean cargo ship Cosco Busan (at right, already damaged) collides with the San Francisco Bay bridge, tearing a hole in the side of the ship and releasing 58,000 gallons of fuel oil into the Bay.
