Hunger is a real problem in the US, with 49 million people in need, 16 million of those children and 4 million of those senior citizens. As the largest domestic hunger relief organization, Feeding America manages 200 food banks that distribute food to 60,000 agencies. It also operates after-school snack and backpack programs that send kids home with meals to cover the weekends. Feeding America’s Mobile Pantry enables food distribution in neighborhoods without brick and mortar facilities. To support these programs and more, 1.2 billion pounds of food donations come from retail stores, with 46% coming from Walmart and Sam’s Club, along with 160 vehicles. Individuals can also take part by donating to local food banks, where $1 can equal nine meals.
