The challenge of the 21st century will be powering the world while protecting our resources and environment. Wind is expected to play an increasingly prominent role as an energy source in the years ahead. Some industry experts even predict wind power will support as much as one-third of the world’s electricity needs by the year 2050.

Modern wind turbines, catching the wind’s energy from hundreds of feet above ground, can help power thousands of homes and businesses. This provides a clean and plentiful source of renewable energy that produces no air or water pollution. No matter how much wind is used, the same supply remains. Ongoing operational costs, after an initial turbine is installed, are also extremely low.

The downside is that, like the sun, wind is variable, so if it’s not blowing, no electricity can be generated. Although that means wind power isn’t always reliable, it’s still a valuable addition to the alternative energy arsenal for reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
