Go ahead and cross rockers Heart off the list of scheduled performers for SeaWorld's 2014 “Bands, Brew, & BBQ” music series. The band has become the latest to cancel its gig with the theme park in the wake of the film "Blackfish;" joining other high-profile acts such as the Barenaked Ladies and Willie Nelson.
“The Sea World show was planned long ago as an Orlando show," wrote Heart guitarist, Nancy Wilson, on Twitter. "Had we known, we’d have said no then. We said no today. Love you all.”
While "Blackfish" has certainly been decisive in bringing these groups to their decision, fans and animal-rights supporters deserve credit for inspiring awareness. Petitions against nearly all of the bands scheduled for the music series have brought in thousands of signatures and spread far across social media. Fan outcry was cited by the Barenaked Ladies as a big part of their motivation to drop the gig.
"We encourage anybody and everybody to get involved with a charity organization they feel passionate about," they wrote. "We here at Barenaked Ladies have made a decision based on what we feel. It's not about money, or petitions, or press... But it is about our fans. We listen to them, and they're important to us. Their sensibilities resonate with ours, and have for decades now. We've grown up together. Ultimately though, we made the decision that WE feel good about."
"I don't agree with the way they treat their animals," Nelson said. "It wasn't that hard a deal for me."
The next bands we're eyeballing to drop out? REO Speedwagon (Petition: 1,500 signatures), Cheap Trick (Petition: 3,400 signatures), and American Idol's Scotty McCreery (Petition: 4,000 signatures). Stay tuned.
