The first trailer for Ang Lee's "Life of Pi" is out and may just be one of the most beautifully stunning previews I've seen all year.

The film, based on the 2001 fantasy adventure novel of the same name by Yann Martel, keeps most of its plot a mystery. We know there's a shipwreck, a boy who survives, and a bengal tiger that shares a boat with him. There are also quick scenes of gorgeous natural beauty — with the highlight clearly the massive bioluminescent whale that jumps out of the ocean.

Not since "Avatar" have I been more excited for a film shot in 3-D.

"Life of Pi" opens in U.S. theaters (2-D and 3-D) on Nov. 21, 2012. Check out the trailer below.

New 'Life of Pi' trailer is breathtaking
If this first look is any indication, Ang Lee's new film about a shipwrecked boy is visually stunning.
