The designers of the High Line, the prettiest spot in New York City to be plowed down by European tourists and spy on naked people, have just released renderings of an intriguing new feature that will serve as the centerpiece of the third and final section of the $250 million elevated railway-turned-urban park project: A nest-shaped garden/public lounging area/pick-up spot that hovers over 30th Street like a big ol' leafy salad bowl.

Serving as the northeast terminus for the wildly popular park at the Hudson Rail Yards at 10th Avenue and West 30th Street, this “extraordinary, sheltered, and vegetated interior room” will draw transfixed High Line visitors — and disoriented urban wildlife — into “a lush and otherworldly environment inspired by the dense layers of a woodland habitat.”

Essentially, the "immersive bowl-shaped structure" is a flora-ringed amphitheater with ample terraced seating enclosed by a lush cover of broad-leaf woodland grasses, ferns, and perennials along with snakebark maple and black tupelo trees. Public restrooms will also be involved, which is good to know for those who plan to traverse the entirety of the High Line with a belly full of sustainable food cart fare. And on that note, it's too early to tell if any giant salad-making events will take take place within the oversized serving dish.

The final $76 million section of the High Line at the Rail Yards is slated to open to the public by the end of next year, although the section’s official gateway dubbed the Spur — the jutting-across-10th Avenue extension of the park that will include the proposed bowl structure — won’t be complete for a couple years after that (it has yet to be funded).

Given that this leafy cocoon thingy isn't opening anytime soon, go ahead and immerse yourself in these rather spectacular renderings from project designers James Corner Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro.

Any initial thoughts on the proposed design, High Line fans?
