With Twitter elevating the Syfy Channel's original "Sharknado" to pop culture heights rarely seen for a B-movie, network execs thought it only fitting that the social network also give birth to the sequel's name.
"Since Twitter played such a huge role in the success of the original movie, we wanted to use that platform to ask our fans to name Sharknado 2," said Thomas Vitale, executive vice president of Syfy's programming and original movies, in a statement. "This response is another reminder of how 'Sharknado' has become a pop culture phenomenon. We want to thank all our viewers for their wonderful contributions to keeping up the shark-mentum.”
Culling through more than 5,000 tweets, the Syfy Channel finally settled on the simple yet hilarious "Sharknado 2: The Second One." The film will be released in July 2014.
As mentioned earlier, "Sharknado 2" will focus on New York City in what I can only imagine will yet again combine the worst of nature's fury with man-eating death-tubes.
“We'll be announcing more details very soon. But we didn't want our fans to worry they wouldn't get their fill of more shark fin, I mean fun, next year."
