Amidst a crowd of screaming fans, "Good Morning America" became the first outlet to score an exclusive first showing of the full "The Hunger Games" trailer. The eagerly awaited film, based on the best-selling science fiction trilogy by Suzanne Collins, takes places in a dystopian world in which North America has been destroyed by some unknown calamity. From the summary:

"As punishment for a previous rebellion against the Capitol, every year, one boy and one girl between the ages of 12 and 18 from each district are selected by lottery and forced to participate in the Hunger Games, a televised event in which the participants, or "tributes," must fight to the death in a dangerous, outdoor arena, controlled by the Capitol, until only one remains."

Last month's teaser footage at the MTV Video Music Awards was agonizingly short, but this latest look does an excellent job at setting up the story right before all of the contestants are set loose into the wild. Truly, a wonderful way to get those who have yet to read the series excited for the film.

"They really seem to have captured the scale of it — I was a bit worried until I saw the trailer," wrote one commenter on CinemaBlend. "That last clip: breathtaking!"

Check out the trailer below. "The Hunger Games" will be released on March 23, 2012.
