The eagerly awaited first footage from "The Hunger Games," based on the best-selling science-fiction trilogy by Suzanne Collins, premiered at the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards this weekend. The story takes places in a dystopian world in which North America has been destroyed by some unknown calamity. A nation called Panem rises from the ashes consisting of a wealthy Capitol and 12 poorer surrounding districts.

Every year, one teenage boy and girl are chosen from the districts to compete in what's called "The Hunger Games," a televised fight-to-the-death. The brutal account of what the competitors endure presents a gripping story, with one reviewer on Amazon calling it "one of the most terrifying books I've read in a very long time."

In this short peek from MTV, we get a glimpse of the main character Katniss (played by Jennifer Lawrence) running through the forest, while fireballs rain down all around her. There's also a bit of bow and arrow action — but something tells me rather than satiating, this frustratingly short teaser is only going to make everyone starve for more.

Check out the clip below. "The Hunger Games" will be released on March 23, 2012.
