Sand Creatures: Hare

All photos: Claire Droppert

Sandy creatures come alive in these frozen, weightless moments captured by photographer Claire Droppert.

The Rotterdam-based artist was inspired after watching her daughter kick sand up in the air during a beach trip. Captivated by the sublime way the sunlight hits the levitating clumps of sand, Droppert uses a high shutter speed and a shovel to sculpt her split-second creations. Each shot is named for an animal it loosely resembles; the one above is called "Hare."

These sand creatures are merely the beginning of her overarching "Gravity" project, which she hopes will explore the way earth's different elements behave in the perceived moments of zero gravity. To follow Droppert's journey, visit her website and follow her on Instagram.
