Dig me river

After receiving more than 15,500 entries from across the globe, the organizers of the 2013 National Geographic Traveler Photo Contest have finally announced its winners.

The grand prize goes to Wagner Araujo, a photographer from Belo Horizonte, Brazil who captured this striking black and white scene of athletes dashing into the surf during a Brazilian aquathlon. Araujo, who will receive a 10-day Galápagos National Geographic Expedition for two, describes his winning photo:

"I was in Manaus, Amazonas, during the Brazilian Aquathlon (swimming and running) championship. I photographed it from the water and my lens got completely wet, but there was so much energy in these boys that I just didn't worry about that."

All the winning photos will appear in the Dec. 2013/Jan. 2014 issue of National Geographic Traveler magazine. Can't wait that long? Continue on for a digital preview with captions provided by the photographers.
