The first lady has more influence than a number of other celebrities when it comes to swaying charitable giving. A new poll has found Michelle Obama beats out celebrity heavy hitters like Oprah and Angelina Jolie in influencing Americans to contribute to charity.
Overall, Americans are 12 times more likely to contribute to a charity promoted by the first lady than they are to those promoted by other celebrities. In fact, Americans are three times as likely to contribute to a charity promoted by Obama as they are to contribute to a charity backed by Oprah. The first lady is also more influential than Taylor Swift, Angelina Jolie, Alicia Keys and Justin Bieber when it comes to influencing giving.
"We applaud everyone, whether you’re famous or not, who stands up for the causes they care about," said Lesley Mansford, CEO of Razoo, which conducted the research. "One certainly doesn’t have to be a celebrity to make a difference. Anyone can make a difference by giving their money, time or influence."
However, not everyone is influenced to give to a charity supported by celebrities. In fact, 65 percent of respondents say they would not contribute to a charity that is backed by celebrities.
The research was based on the responses of 2,059 adults in the United States over age 18. Razoo is a crowdfunding platform for more than 1,000 charities that allows people to pick which charities they would like to donate to.
